DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kyle Monkman\, The University of Manitoba \nTalk title: Symmetry Protection in Hermitian and Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians  \nAbstract: Symmetry-protected topological insulators are protected by both the symmetry and by the system’s band gap. This protection means that certain properties of the system remain unchanged by deformations of the (Hermitian) Hamiltonian. In my PhD work\, we have shown that entanglement is a symmetry protected quantity in various symmetry classes. \nOn the other hand\, when considering a system in an external environment\, it is difficult to show that the system is topologically protected. It is in these cases that modelling the time dynamics with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian becomes relevant. Ultimately\, the goal is to classify non-Hermitian time dynamics under various symmetry constraints. If measurable quantities are protected in these systems\, then we would have a very robust quantum state.
