Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute researchers have found that by applying a magnetic field to a small and irregularly shaped graphene flake, the flake can be used to create a quantum hologram that reproduces some of the key characteristics of a black hole.

,

The research was recently published in Physical Review Letters and featured by the journal as an Editors’ Suggestion. SBQMI graduate student Anffany Chen is lead author on the article, “Quantum Holography in a Graphene Flake with an Irregular Boundary”, which is co-authored by SBQMI professor Marcel Franz and researchers in Israel, the UK, and the US.

On July 30, 2018, the magazine Physics World showcased the work in a research update. The work also appeared in a phys.org feature on July 25, 2018.
