A delegation of 26 students and two accompanying professors, Gertjan Koster and Hans Hilgenkamp, from the University of Twente, Netherlands, visited UBC on July 8th. The group comprised a mix of last year undergrad and Masters students from the Applied Physics program at University of Twente, a program that is equivalent to Engineering Physics at UBC.

,

Their coming to UBC was part of a 3-week trip along the West coast supported by their university, along which they visited multiple universities and companies in the US, including Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UC Los Angeles, and in Canada. Vancouver was their only stop in Canada, and after visiting UBC, they also visited SFU for a day.

Their visit at UBC was co-organized by Prof. Anthony Wachs (MATH/CHBE) and Prof. Ian Frigaard (MECH/MATH) from the Fluids group (Frigaard, Feng, Wachs, Balmforth, Elfring, Martinez).

,

Their visit to QMI was hosted by George Sawatzky and organized by Jasmine Chipman Koty. Students from Twente spent the morning of July 8th with the Fluids group. After a 90min presentation of the research activities conducted at UBC in Fluid Mechanics, they toured various experimental facilities on campus: a demo of the flow loops hosted in the rusty hut and operated by Prof. Frigaard’s group and a visit of experimental works performed at the Pulp and Paper center, coordinated by Prof. Martinez.

,

In the afternoon, students were hosted by George Sawatzky on a visit to the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute, where they heard presentations about correlated electrons, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and research in 2-D materials by Robert Green, Joshua Folk and Ryan Day. The visit ended in a tour of onsite facilities such as the ARPES lab and the UBC-Moore Centre for Ultrafast Quantum Matter.

,

In the evening, our visitors from Twente, the QMI people and the Fluids group people convened on Locarno beach for a BBQ to discuss further opportunities offered by UBC to grad students and to socialize. At the BBQ party, the faculty of APSC was officially represented by the head of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Steve Feng, and the faculty of Science by the head of Mathematics, Prof. Philip Loewen. Many of the students from Twente were exploring opportunities to come to UBC as a grad student or a VIRS for a research internship. Given the memorable experience they had on July 8th, both scientifically and socially, we look forward to seeing them back in our labs on UBC campus.
