Quantum technologies are advancing rapidly across computing, cybersecurity, materials science and other industries, creating growing demand for professionals with quantum knowledge and applied skills. As quantum technologies move closer to commercialization, organizations are seeking professionals who can understand quantum concepts, recognize their real-world applications and work across multidisciplinary teams.

The UBC Micro-certificate Step into Quantum is a part-time, online program that helps you build foundational quantum knowledge and explore how quantum technologies connect to your field or career goals. Designed to be accessible, approachable and application focused, the program explores core quantum principles, algorithms, cryptography, sensors and sector applications so you can build confidence, strengthen critical thinking and better understand what quantum technologies mean for your work and industry.

Developed by the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute, this micro-certificate combines foundational quantum learning with insights into both global players and BC’s growing quantum sector. You gain exposure to industry applications, career pathways and emerging opportunities in quantum technologies while developing a personalized quantum readiness plan to help guide your next steps in learning and professional development.

What this program offers

The Step into Quantum Micro-certificate builds foundational understanding of quantum technologies and their emerging applications across computing, cybersecurity, materials science and other sectors. You will develop the ability to interpret quantum concepts in practical terms, recognize where quantum solutions may be relevant, and begin connecting quantum developments to your own professional or academic context.

By the end of this program, you’ll be able to:

  • understand core quantum principles and how they underpin key quantum technologies
  • recognize where quantum approaches may offer value in real-world problems and industry contexts
  • identify key organizations, innovators and emerging opportunities within the quantum sector in BC and across Canada
  • gain hands-on experience with basic quantum programming to assess the need for further training on specific tools and platforms
  • explore quantum career pathways and map potential next steps for continued learning or professional development
  • engage with foundational quantum cryptography, algorithms and sensing applications at an introductory level

Who is this program for

This program is designed for early- to mid-career professionals, STEM graduates and technology-adjacent learners who want to build foundational quantum literacy and understand how quantum technologies are shaping emerging applications and career pathways. It also supports those looking to connect quantum concepts to their current role or future direction, without requiring prior experience in quantum science.

Technical or programming experience is not required. The program is designed to support learners from a range of academic and professional backgrounds, including those working in or adjacent to technical environments.

Learners may come from a variety of roles and sectors, including:

  • engineering and applied sciences
  • information technology and software and quantum software development
  • cybersecurity and quantum-safe communications
  • physics, mathematics and other STEM disciplines

Costs

Each course costs $1,050. The total program cost is $2,100.

Courses and dates

The UBC Micro-certificate Step into Quantum consists of two courses of five weeks each. Combined, the courses take about 50 hours to complete.

Foundations of Quantum Technologies is the prerequisite course for this micro-certificate. Although you can take Foundations of Quantum Technologies without continuing to Applications of Quantum Technology, to realize the full benefits and learning objectives of this program, we recommend you take both courses.

How we deliver this program

This part-time, 100% online program is instructor supported with real-time sessions. Each week includes a one-hour live session where you can ask questions, discuss content and connect with your instructor and peers. Attendance in the live sessions is optional but encouraged. Live sessions are recorded and available for later viewing.

Outside of live sessions, you work through weekly online modules at your own pace. Learning activities include readings, videos, discussion boards and weekly quizzes to reinforce key concepts. You will also complete a sector mapping activity focused on the quantum industry and develop a Quantum Readiness Plan. These activities help you explore potential applications of quantum technologies and identify next steps for your learning or career development.

Expected effort

Expect to spend approximately five hours per week completing all activities, including participation in live sessions.

To take this program, you need access to: an email account

  • a current web browser
  • a reliable internet connection
  • a microphone and video capability for live sessions

Textbooks and materials

All learning materials are provided online through the learning platform. No external textbooks are required.

Assessment

You are assessed through a combination of in-course knowledge checks and written assignments that reinforce key concepts and support their application in real-world contexts. Written assignments are evaluated using a standard rubric provided at the beginning of each course.

You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% in each course to successfully complete the program and earn your micro-certificate.

While attendance at the real-time online sessions is not assessed, participation is encouraged so you can ask questions, engage with your instructor and connect with other learners. All sessions are recorded for later viewing.

Obtaining your credential

When you have successfully completed the program requirements, you will receive a digital badge for the UBC Micro-certificate Step into Quantum. Registered students can review and print enrolment documents by logging into your Lifelong Learning account.

Meet your instructors

This program is developed and taught by instructors affiliated with the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at UBC. They bring expertise in quantum science and a commitment to making complex concepts accessible, relevant and applicable to learners from a range of backgrounds.

 

Ella Meyer, BSc, is the Quantum Computing Outreach Coordinator at UBC Geering Up and the Project Manager for the Diversifying Talent in Emerging Technologies Program. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Astronomy from the University of British Columbia in 2020 and has been working in science education and communication for over four years in partnership with industry and academics worldwide. In 2025, she was named one of the Quantum 100 by the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, a UNESCO initiative celebrating 100 years of quantum physics.

 

James Day, PhD, is a Research Associate and Senior Scientist at the Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (QMI) at the University of British Columbia, where he studies quantum materials at the atomic scale using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Alberta and has been recognized with the NSERC Doctoral Prize and an Izaak Walton Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship, with research published in Nature, Science, and Physical Review Letters. He has a long-standing commitment to physics education, exploring how learning environments can be more reflective, inclusive and authentic. He also coordinates Ars Scientia, a program that brings scientists and artists together to explore the human dimensions of research.
